Former garda fails to show

A FORMER Assistant Garda Commissioner has failed to appear to give evidence at the Smithwick Tribunal. The tribunal had written to Kevin Carty several times.

Mr Justice Peter Smithwick said that for a former “very senior officer to treat correspondence with the tribunal with that sort of contempt is very, very wrong”. He gave Mr Carty a chance to appear before the tribunal later this month.

The tribunal is investigating claims that gardaí colluded in the IRA murder of RUC officers.
