THE number of patients on trolleys in hospitals across the country yesterday was 60% more compared to the same day last year.

According to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), there were 354 patients on trolleys in emergency departments, compared to 215 on the same day last year.

General secretary Liam Doran said the INMO was extremely concerned at the unprecedented number of patients on trolleys at this time of year.
