€10 dinner kits may have students salivating

“COME dine with me” might be soon be the catch-cry of students at University College Cork as much as the name of a popular TV cookery show.

€10 dinner kits may have students salivating

Cork entrepreneur David O’Leary has come up with the novel idea of selling students, who have a reputation for living on diets of baked beans and toasted sandwiches, four nutritional meals each week for the recession-busting price of €10.

College-Dinners, the company established by the 34-year-old from Rochestown, Co Cork, will deliver students with all the key ingredients, including meat and vegetables, for four meals every Monday at eight locations around the UCC campus during term time.

O’Leary, a UCC employee, claims his business can provide such fresh and affordable food directly to the 10,000 students living in rented accommodation on or near the UCC campus.

His initial target is to attract 300 regular customers to sign up for their weekly dinner kits.

“Students by their nature and own admission are very lazy so hopefully they will see the benefits of what we are trying to do,” said O’Leary.

College-Dinners, which is supported by UCC Students Union, has also launched a linked website which will be updated weekly with new recipes.

O’Leary said he aims to provide students with a choice of around 20 popular recipes including such student favourites such as chilli con carne, bangers and mash and a pork and mushroom stir-fry. Meat will be sourced from O’Connell’s Butchers in Cork and will come in vacuum-packed bags. Meal deals can also be pre-ordered.

“We’re hoping to change the culture of eating for students in UCC. I’m already involved in the societies at the university through my day job and we want to make sure that it is as easy as possible for students to maintain a healthy diet in an affordable way,” explained O’Leary.

He hoped that the initiative would encourage students to enjoy the fun of cooking meals for themselves and their friends.
