Envoy recalled for Vatican response

EXPRESSING surprise and regret at some of the “excessive reactions” to the Cloyne Report the Vatican recalled its ambassador to Ireland to discuss the preparation of its response.

However, despite the unprecedented escalation of the diplomatic stand-off with the Holy See, the Government stood firm.

Social Protection Minister Joan Burton said the standard applied to child protection by the Vatican “fell far short of the understanding you would expect from the Vatican.”
