McIlroy breaks up with Holly for love match with Wozniacki
In a statement released by the Holywood star’s management company, “the long-time relationship came to an amicable end just before the Open Championship”.
Sources close to McIlroy confirmed last night that he has formed a close friendship with 21-year-old Danish star Wozniacki.
McIlroy made two visits to Wimbledon following his US Open triumph four weeks ago, but is believed to have met Wozniacki at the boxing title fight between David Haye and Vladimir Klitschko in Hamburg on July 2.
McIlroy admitted after his eight-shot US Open win that he made a bogey when he broke off his long-term relationship with his childhood sweetheart Holly at the start of the season to concentrate on his golf.
“I have known Holly for six years, and for a 22-year-old that is a big part of my life,” he said recently. “At the start of the year I wanted to focus on my game, and just take a break or whatever.
“But I realised pretty quickly that I had made a mistake, and I had to do a lot of begging and groveling to get her back.
“She is fantastic. She definitely keeps my feet on the ground, and she knows me better basically than anyone else,” he said. “I have spent so much time with her and she knows the things to say to me.”
The pair had been going steady since they were teenagers and she was also a shoulder to cry on at Augusta in April, when McIlroy’s management team flew her out for the final day of the Masters.
McIlroy blew his chance of becoming the first Irish winner of a green jacket when he crashed to a final-round 80 to lose a four-shot overnight lead.
But seeing Holly there eased the pain. “She takes my mind off golf and everything else that is going on,” McIlroy said. “I gave her a hug and said something like I was sorry she wasted her time coming over.
“But having her there made Sunday night a lot easier, having someone there you really know,” he revealed.
The couple lived together with their two dogs at McIlroy’s €2.2 million, 13-acre hideaway outside Belfast.
