English Market riding royal wave with CBA award

IT will come as little or no surprise that The English Market has scooped the second-quarter Cork Business Association Heineken Award for the outstanding coverage it received during Queen Elizabeth II’s visit.

English Market riding royal wave with CBA award

The market, dating back to 1788, was one of two award winners announced by the CBA last night at a ceremony held in Heineken Ireland.

“This is truly a tremendous honour for both the niche traders of The English Market and Cork City Council, coming as it does so soon after the most wonderfully successful visit of Queen Elizabeth II on Friday, May 20,” CBA president Sean Murphy said.

He said while the city had been modernised significantly during the past decade, acquiring a whole new shopping precinct at Opera Lane and a complete transformation of St Patrick’s Street, Oliver Plunkett Street and Grand Parade, The English Market continued to do what it did best and had done for some 223 years. “That, of course, is serving a city and making available an abundance of fresh, wholesome and healthy food to generations of loyal customers,” Mr Murphy said.

The market won the large enterprise award.

Meanwhile, Camera World, which opened 25 years ago, also won a second quarter award at the ceremony, which is backed by media sponsors the Irish Examiner.

The Oliver Plunkett Street shop has gone through a number of reincarnations down through the years. In the 90s it doubled in size and in 2003 it was again totally revamped.

“The company has traded through good and bad times and finds itself now once more in a challenging business environment. The philosophy at Camera World has always been to look to the future, trade in the present, and resist comparisons with the past. This seems more relevant than ever in today’s troubled times,” Mr Murphy said
