Gunman in stand-off

THERE were dramatic scenes in Waterford city last night as a man on top of a four-storey apartment block waved what appeared to be a gun.

Armed gardaí and negotiators were called to the scene at the Glen, Penrose Lane, at around 5.30pm.

The man was wearing a dark-coloured tracksuit and a light-coloured cap. He was carrying what appeared to be a handgun, although gardaí did not confirm whether it was a real weapon or a replica.

The man, believed to be local, was involved in the stand-off for several hours before being arrested shortly after 11pm after going into an apartment.

Video footage taken from the roof of the adjoining building showed the man looking down at assembled gardaí and onlookers, and appeared on Youtube shortly after the stand-off began.

The poster of the video commented (sic): “I filmed it im living in the next block he had a hand gun not sure if it was real he didnt have a hostage and he didnt shoot anyone.”
