Killaloe bids to reclaim status as Ireland’s capital

KILLALOE is seeking to reclaim its title as the capital of Ireland — for one weekend, at least — as it celebrates the 1,000th anniversary of the death of Brian Boru at the Battle of Clontarf.

As part of its celebrations, the Clare town on the shores of Lough Derg is hoping it will be designated the ‘honorary capital’ in April 2014.

During Brian Boru’s 12-year reign as King of Ireland he resided in Killaloe, which was recognised as the capital.

In a report, Brian Boru 2014 — Killaloe, to be discussed by members of Clare County Council next Monday, a locally-based steering committee says it is also planning a charity March of Warriors to recreate the departure of the army led by Brian Boru as he marched towards Clontarf in 1014.

There will also be a world reunion in Killaloe of the 700,000-strong O’Brien clan.

The committee will publish its plan this month and local residents said rugby stalwart Keith Wood and comedian Brendan Grace, “are proud to be Brian Boru 2014 ambassadors”.

The organisers said they are working with Shannon Development and Fáilte Ireland on the plan.
