KILLALOE is seeking to reclaim its title as the capital of Ireland — for one weekend, at least — as it celebrates the 1,000th anniversary of the death of Brian Boru at the Battle of Clontarf.

As part of its celebrations, the Clare town on the shores of Lough Derg is hoping it will be designated the ‘honorary capital’ in April 2014.

During Brian Boru’s 12-year reign as King of Ireland he resided in Killaloe, which was recognised as the capital.
