Complaints to watchdog at 10-year high

COMPLAINTS about government departments and other state bodies reached a 10-year high in 2010 with a total of 3,727 cases received by the public service watchdog.

Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly said the 30% rise in complaints received last year was indicative of an increasing number of people experiencing difficulties with the public services, especially in relation to unemployment and social welfare benefits.

In addition, 1,317 other complaints were submitted to the Ombudsman but ruled out as they didn’t come under her remit. Her office also handled almost 9,400 general queries.
