Women to line out ahead of Munster for charity walk
Up to 1,000 women will take on the 10k Pink Ribbon Walk by the lough in Killaloe this weekend.
The event will begin an hour earlier than planned to allow participants shout on Munster in the Magners League Final against arch-rivals Leinster.
The start-time for the walk is now 1.30pm and chairperson Nicola Wood said yesterday: “It’s probably fair to say that pretty much everyone participating in... Killaloe Pink Ribbon Walk will want to catch every minute of the match as well, so we have decided to give ourselves an extra hour to enable all do this comfortably.
“Up to 80% of participants are women but we are still telling the men that they’ll be minding the kids for the day.
“It is building up to be a great day. No doubt Killaloe will be looking its best, as it did last year, for the walk and participants will have plenty of time to finish the 10k and still make it to Thomond with an hour or more to spare if they wish.
Ms Wood added: “We have had a great response so far from the public in the Ballina/Killaloe area and we have reached deeper into the three counties of Clare, Limerick and Tipperary this year so the walk is definitely growing as an event.”
Action Breast Cancer is Ireland’s leading provider of breast cancer information and support and, every year, reaches over 25.000 women with concerns over their health, Ms Wood said.
Organisers are hoping to double participation levels from last year’s inaugural walk when 550 took part and raised over €80,000 for Action Breast Cancer.
The 10k Killaloe Pink Ribbon walk starts at the Lakeside Hotel at 1.30pm and travels along a picturesque route through the foothills overlooking Lough Derg before swinging back down into the town to the hotel.
