GARRET FitzGerald passed away knowing that the good relations he dreamed of between Ireland and Britain were a reality, mourners at his funeral were told.

Chief celebrant Fr Enda McDonagh said that by some miracle the former taoiseach and signatory to the groundbreaking Anglo-Irish Agreement, regained consciousness during his final hours to see for himself Queen Elizabeth and President McAleese together on his television screen.

“It was the culmination of what he had for so long struggled and we are grateful for it,” said Fr McDonagh, a former professor of moral theology at Maynooth and a lifelong friend of Dr FitzGerald.
