Irish ladies watch royal wedding in luxury

CAKES, champagne and cucumber sandwiches were the order of the morning for the ladies at Hayfield Manor, Cork, as they waited for the start of the royal wedding.

Glamorous grannies, daughters and ladies of leisure gathered in the hotel drawing room as the first images of Prince William making his way to Westminster Abbey hit the screen.

One guest enjoying a taste of regal treatment was Cora Murphy from Carlow, who was in Cork with her daughter, Olive. She said: “I’ve always been a big fan of the royals, and the highlight of my holiday to Cork has been coming here to see the wedding — it’s like a fairytale.”

“I think Kate is lovely, she seems like a happy girl with a good attitude.”

Doreta Landon, from Rathcormac and Sandra Deane, from Mallow, also enjoyed the royal occasion.

“We decided we wanted to go somewhere nice to see the wedding and make a day of it,” explained Doreta.

“Everyone loves to see a princess and people dressed in their finest on an occasion like this — even if they don’t agree with the politics behind it.”

Discussion soon turned to the Queen’s outfit — “I thought she would have wore blue” was the consensus — as cups of tea flutes of champagne clinked while the bridal car began its drive to the church.

“You can see her veil,” gasped one of the guests, pointing to the screen excitedly.

As the bride finally emerged, conversation turned to unavoidable comparisons between Kate and Princess Diana.

From the aptly named town of Midleton, were Roseanne and Louise Maher.

“I think Kate is fantastic,” said Roseanne. “But Diana was very special, she was a lady — I really feel for William and Harry. It would have been lovely for them if she could have been there.”

As the service began, silence fell on the room, with the occasional whisper of how Kate seemed to take the occasion in her stride. “Kate looks fantastic, very graceful,” said Cora. “But I’d say Camilla is really struggling in those shoes.”
