IRISH experts have taken the first step towards a potential treatment for schizophrenia after uncovering a close link between the condition and epilepsy.

Researchers from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and Beaumont Hospital made the discovery after examining seizures caused by abnormal electrical impulses in the brain.

Irish medical website www.irishhealth.com has reported scientists found a link between epilepsy — which affects more than 40,000 people in Ireland — and a form of schizophrenia disorder known as temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).
