HEALTH Minister James Reilly said Ireland was supporting an EU-wide initiative to prevent doctors struck off a medical register in one member state from practising in another.

Mechanisms must be introduced to protect patients from rogue doctors, he stressed.

If a doctor was found to be incompetent or struck off, it should be communicated in the strongest way throughout the rest of the EU, he said.
