SINN Féin is to organise “alternative events” such as concerts or public meetings instead of protests during the visit of the Queen of England next month.

The party is mindful that she and her husband, Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, are an “elderly couple” and said that “nobody wishes to be unnecessarily confrontational” during their stay here.

Sinn Féin’s deputy leader, Mary Lou McDonald, said people should “not cast a slur or republicanism by having confrontation and aggro on the streets”.
