WATER charges will not be imposed on households for at least three years, the Government signalled last night.

The €500 million water meter installation plan will take until then to complete, junior environment minister Fergus O’Dowd told the Dáil.

Mr O’Dowd said the last government had committed the country to water charging as part of the EU/IMF bailout deal and the new administration could not renege on it.
