Family get payout over mother’s TV embalming

A FAMILY that was traumatised after switching over to a state TV station to witness their deceased mother’s entire embalming process being secretly filmed have received an out-of-court settlement from producers.

Family get payout over mother’s TV embalming

The relatives of Noreen McGrath, 71, from Dungarvan, Co Waterford, took the case after watching TG4’s controversial Adhlacóirí (Undertakers) programme, which followed three undertakers in Dungarvan, Connemara and Donegal. It was also shown at the 2009 Galway Film Fleadh.

The five children of Ms McGrath, who passed away at Waterford Regional Hospital in September 2007, were unaware of any recording when they tuned into the show last January 13.

They immediately recognised their mother’s body on Dungarvan undertakers James Kiely and Sons’ slab as incisions were made and blood was drained from her remains.

The family said they had never given permission for the work to be filmed and were unaware of any potential coverage between 2007 and the 2010 broadcast — a statement TG4 has acknowledged is accurate.

Reports yesterday said it is believed the camera crew did receive permission to film from Mr Kiely or one of his staff but the undertaker group has refused to clarify this matter publicly.

In court proceedings against film production company Wildfire, the firm behind the programme, and David Kiely of James Kiely and Sons undertakers, Ms McGrath’s daughter Áine Nic Craith said her family were traumatised by what they saw. The matter was settled out of court.

In a public apology published in a local newspaper last week, TG4 confirmed the details of the case but failed to clarify why permission was not obtained.

“We wish to unreservedly apologise to Riona Green, Áine Nic Craith, Eibhlín Walsh, Padraig Mac Craith, Sean Mac Craith and Aodh Mac Craith in connection with a broadcast on TG4.

“(This programme) contained footage of the embalming and funeral of the late Noreen McGrath, mother of the above named persons.

“We unquestionably accept that no permission was obtained and we accept that the broadcast was in no way made or authorised by each of these persons or any of them.”

The statement added that the programme will never be aired again.
