Man stabbed in the heart

A LONG night of celebration by eight Indians in Dublin ended in a violent row with two men stabbed. One was left fighting for his life.

Man stabbed in the heart

The group, along with two Irish girlfriends, spent Thursday and early Friday in a drink-fuelled session after watching India beat Australia in the quarter-final of the Cricket World Cup.

Gardaí said a fight broke out in the early hours of yesterday between a number of them, during which one man was stabbed twice, including once in the heart, while another received relatively minor stab wounds.

Gardaí said they were called to an apartment on Greenmount Lawns in Terenure at 5.20am, where they found a man in a collapsed state in the porch.

He had been stabbed in the chest and stomach. When they entered the apartment they found another man with lesser stab wounds. Gardaí recovered a knife.

The two injured men were taken to St James’s Hospital where the first man, thought to be middle aged, was rushed into theatre.

Gardaí said that he was in a critical condition last night.

“He has a hole in his heart,” said a garda source. “We don’t know if he is going to make it. They have pumped in eight units of blood.”

The second man, aged 26, was released from hospital earlier.

Gardaí arrested a 36-year-old man at the scene. He was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Terenure Garda Station.

Detectives are trying to establish what happened at the house.

“They were all watching the cricket match and drinking and some row broke out. There are two to three suspects, but one main aggressor,” said a garda source.

He said the occupants were either students, on visas or working in restaurants.

“It’s very unusual to have trouble with Indians, they never stick their heads above the parapet,” said the source.

Gardaí are now conducting background checks on all of them and trying to identify next of kin in India.

The two Irish girls in the house are girlfriends of two of the Indian men.

Both are from Blackrock in south Dublin.

They were in bed at the time of the violence.
