U2’s venture into the world of theatre appears to have suffered yet another setback, after the creator, director and key scriptwriter of the band’s Spider-Man musical was told to leave the project.

US reports last night said at least two investors in the €47 million Broadway, New York, extravaganza have been informed Tony-award winner Julie Taymor will step aside.

The move is being forced through by lead producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah Harris, who have worked closely on the project with both Bono and the Edge. The quartet are understood to be of the view that Ms Taymor has to be replaced to ensure it becomes a commercial success.
