Cashel banking on royal visit

A TRIP to the Tipperary town of Cashel will be included on the Queen of England’s itinerary during her forthcoming visit to Ireland, if the local Town Council has its way.

Cashel’s Deputy Mayor, Maribel Wood, has proposed the council write to the British Embassy to invite Queen Elizabeth II to visit the ancient City of the Kings.

Speaking at this week’s council meeting, she said a royal visit would be a great way to promote the town.

She said a significant number of British visitors came to Cashel each year in recognition of its history and architecture.

Cllr Wood said the queen could be in the area, as it had been suggested she might visit Coolmore Stud near Fethard in Tipperary during her three-day state visit.

The visit, the first to the Republic by a reigning British monarch, is expected to take place in May.

President Mary McAleese announced the news last week when she confirmed that Queen Elizabeth had accepted an invitation to visit.

The queen will be accompanied by her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.

The other members supported Cllr Wood’s proposal.
