Eight motorists owe €69,000 in parking fines
The local authority last week announced that it would tow away any of eight vehicles belonging to those who had not displayed the appropriate parking tickets.
In recent years the same eight motorists, understood to be five men and three women, have been parking at will around the city and ignoring parking tickets.
These people had refused to accept summonses delivered by both ordinary and registered mail to their homes, said Senior Jim Hickey, a senior executive engineer at the corporate affairs and transport department in the council.
These eight people are residents in the city.
Proving these people were living at the addresses concerned had proved “not easy in a legal sense”, said Mr Hickey yesterday.
One car owner owes about €15,000 while another has a bill for over €10,000.
The remaining six people owe the rest of the extraordinary sum.
Mr Hickey yesterday said: “We have warned them to pay up like everyone else or have their vehicles removed from the streets.
“A number of people on that list have since contacted us and have applied for residents’ permits.
“Now, we have evidence of where they live,” he added.
