APPLE last night unveiled a sleeker, lighter, faster, iPad at a launch that included a surprise appearance by talismanic chief executive, Steve Jobs.

At the event in San Francisco, which was streamed live to London, Mr Jobs said he “didn’t want to miss” the launch. He has been on a leave of absence since January. As he walked onto the stage there was a warm, heart-felt welcome from the audience.

The first iPad was the hottest technology device of 2010, selling nearly 15 million units and although many critics were not convinced at first because they didn’t know how to label it.
