€3.5m system to identify leaks in water system

WORK is set to start on preventing a staggering six billion gallons of drinking water being wasted each year in Co Cork due to pipe breaks in the supply network.

The losses represent 45% of the total water produced in the county.

To combat the wastage, 500 meters are to be placed around the county which will be linked to a central computer monitoring system.
