Christmas tree may stick around for green day

SAINT Patrick’s Day may just be around the corner but thanks to one “landmark” the Christmas spirit will be staying in Limerick city for the time being.

Christmas tree may stick around for green day

Almost nine weeks since Christmas, Limerick’s 100ft eco-friendly floating Christmas tree is showing little sign of being moved from its unique position on the River Shannon.

The tree, which is made entirely from salvaged metal from the Thomond Park and Limerick Tunnel construction sites, is the tallest Christmas tree in the country and has been the centrepiece of the city’s festive celebrations for the past three years.

According to the director of services at Limerick City Council, Kieran Lehane, the tree is a big hit with locals and visitors, with most people suggesting the tree should be given permanent residence on the river.

“The tree was originally intended for Christmas, but a number of people have contacted us anxious that something more permanent should be done with it, rather than taking it down every year,” said Mr Lehane.

“I have often seen people admiring it, and it would be wonderful for the city if it could become a landmark and a unique tourist attraction.”

The tree previously caused a stir in 2009 when it broke loose from its moorings in the middle of the river and went adrift downstream before eventually becoming lodged by the Shannon Bridge.

Mr Lehane added that the council is currently looking into the possibility of having different coloured lighting on the tree for different occasions.

“People have suggested that we put green lighting on it for St Patrick’s Day and red lighting for the weekends when Munster play, and we are considering the feasibility of doing this, though nothing concrete has been decided yet.

“We have only had one complaint so far about it still being in the river in February, Limerick people have a great sense of ownership about it because it is so unique, and overall I think it has really enhanced the feelgood factor in the city,” he added.
