Theatre personality wins Person of the Year accolade
He was rewarded for his efforts with a well-earned holiday in the sun.
Mr Corcoran was recognised for his valuable contribution and dedication to theatre and the arts in Waterford City for over 40 years.
He was a key player of the Waterford Pantomime society and during the heyday of variety in Waterford when The Tops of the Town were a golden age of community entertainment.
Denny has a long and proud association with musical theatre in the city through his involvement with the De La Salle Musical Society in the late 1950’s. In 1962 he won the inaugural Tops of the Town in Waterford representing Waterford Ironfoundry.
On a semi-professional level he enjoyed success as a musician and singer not only in Waterford but also in the US where he toured in 1970. He also recorded an A-side single, Memories of Waterford/City of Music.
Denny directed the Waterford Pantomime Society from 1985 until December 2000.
He also enjoyed success on the sports field playing as a member of the De La Salle Gaelic football senior team which won the county championship in 1958. He played with the county team for 10 years and was in goal when Waterford famously defeated Kerry at Walsh Park in 1957.
The awards were sponsored and organised by FBD Hotels/Munster Express and the winners were announced at The Tower Hotel, Waterford.
Mayor of Waterford Mary Roche said: “He is an inspiration to us all; he has given a lifetime of dedicated service to the people of Waterford city and they voted him winner today so this truly affirms their appreciation of Denny’s efforts which spanned over 40 years.”
