Father of three killed in mine explosion

A ZINC mine which is about to be taken over by an Indian multi-national has become the scene of tragedy following an underground explosion which killed one man and left another injured.

The man, in his late 40s, who died in the incident at Lisheen Mine in Co Tipperary on Wednesday evening was named yesterday as Joe Fallon. He was a father-of-three who lived in Callan, Co Kilkenny, but was from Two-Mile-Borris near Thurles. He worked as a manager at the facility.

Mechanic Chris Barlow, who is in his 50s and from the village of Moyne outside Thurles, received injuries described by Garda as “not life-threatening” and was taken to Cork University Hospital where he remained yesterday.
