AN initial glance at the figures could lead to the impression that Cork County Council was somehow more deserving of money for its regional and local road network than the rest of the country.

A cynic might think it part of a vote-getting effort by an outgoing government party led by a man who will tread those same highways and byways over the next three weeks.

But in fact the real reason Cork County Council is earmarked for €42 million under the Government’s €375m road investment programme is because the county has a greater share of local and regional roads than any other county.
