EMERGENCY services staff were lucky to escape serious injury in a series of incidents as freezing weather meant many roads around the country were treacherous for motorists.

A young garda was injured early yesterday after a pick-up truck lost control and ploughed into the scene of an earlier collision in Co Clare.

Five people in total were treated in hospital following the six-vehicle crash which happened near Edenvale on the main N68 Ennis to Kilrush road.
