THE number of people on trolleys in emergency departments yesterday stood at 400, with one woman claiming she faced two waits totalling 42 hours for a bed in a Cork hospital before Christmas.

Some of the hospitals worst affected by emergency department & overcrowding over the past week were still hardest hit yesterday.

According to statistics compiled by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), Beaumont Hospital in Dublin still had 38 people on trolleys yesterday, just one behind the 39 people on trolleys at the Adelaide and Meath Hospital in Tallaght.
