New Zealander Vivien Lynch represented her country in the famous festival in 2002. However, last year she was the victim of a robbery where the thief took off with two boxes containing “irreplaceable” memorabilia of her time in Ireland.

Vivien was heartbroken at the loss and her partner contacted the festival office, which stepped in to ensure she would receive a Christmas present to remember.

For Vivien, the gesture towards a former contestant was an act she will not forget. “Two jewellery boxes were stolen, which contained irreplaceable pieces gifted to me by the sponsors and friends of the festival. My heart was broken,” she said.

“This Christmas my partner contacted Valerie at the Rose of Tralee office in Co Kerry in the hope that he may be able to replace some of the items taken. On Christmas Eve I received an enormous parcel in the post containing Newbridge jewellery, commemorative books and newspaper articles from the 2002 festival, at no charge,” she said.

Vivien was stunned by the gesture, particularly at a time of economic hardship and said her week in Ireland was the happiest of her life.

“During these times of financial hardship and economic uncertainty I was totally overwhelmed by this act of generosity.

“I am delighted to be a part of a very special international family. Long may the festival continue.

“I travelled to Ireland, where I spent a week showered in incredible hospitality by the hosts, sponsors and other contestants. The week was the happiest and most memorable of my life to date. My lasting impression will always be of the warmth and kindness of the people of Ireland,” she said.
