Seanad future in doubt as parties favour abolishment

THE Seanad looks doomed after Labour confirmed that it too favours abolishing the institution.

Fine Gael has already proposed the Seanad’s abolition and has pledged to put the issue to a referendum if returned to power.

Now Fine Gael’s likely coalition partners have said they too want to get rid of the upper house. Labour will outline its proposals for a referendum when publishing new policy on political reform this week.
