SINN FEIN’S Martin McGuinness said his relationship with the DUP leader, Peter Robinson, has grown stronger as a result of the first minister’s personal problems over the past year.

The deputy first minister said he made a “real effort” to get on with the first minister because otherwise the North’s institutions could have collapsed.

While people “marvelled” that he and Ian Paisley became “very good friends”, people did not expect that he and Mr Robinson would develop a “very good working relationship”.
