A MAJOR manhunt is under way after a 29-year-old man was stabbed to death outside a busy nightclub early yesterday morning.

The Polish national, who had been living in Naas, Co Kildare, for a number of years, was attacked near the Wright Venue bar in Swords, north Dublin, just after 4am.

The deceased is understood to have been socialising at the well-known establishment with a group of at least 10 other people and left at about 3am.

However, within an hour he had been rushed to the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin after being attacked with a knife by at least one person.

He was subsequently taken to the Mater Hospital where he died at 4pm yesterday afternoon.

A Garda spokesperson said investigating officers are keeping an open mind on the incident, which occurred hours after a car bomb was found outside the same nightclub.

The homemade bomb was left underneath a car beside the popular nightclub and, according to army bomb disposal experts, was a viable device which “had the potential to harm or kill”.

After being alerted to the danger, army officers carried out a controlled explosion on the improvised pipe-bomb device.

The potentially lethal weapon was found hidden under a Range Rover in a car park next to the Wright Venue nightclub and several other businesses at 1.30am yesterday morning.

The driver of the 4X4 presented himself to gardaí at the scene. It is not known if the driver, who is not the registered owner of the vehicle, was targeted or had inadvertently parked his car where the device was left.

“At the moment the two incidents are being treated as separate incidents,” a Garda spokesperson confirmed.

Officers have appealed for anyone with information on either incident, and particularly those in the Polish community in relation to the murder, to contact them at Swords Garda Station on 01-6664700.
