A MAJOR drive by the Irish Blood Transfusion Service to boost supplies has succeeded in removing the threat of hospital operations having to be cancelled this week.

The blood bank experienced a sudden drop in donations last week due to the bad weather.

An IBTS spokesperson said a total of 687 units were collected at six clinics throughout the country on Sunday, enough to replenish what was lost last week because of the weather.
