A NEW world record was achieved in Limerick at the weekend when thousands of Irish and Welsh rugby fans lined out to support the third world charity Bóthar.

The development agency succeeded in setting a new world record for the greatest number of people wearing a Santa hat at any one time.

Thomond Park was the setting for the historic occasion, where rugby fans attending the Munster versus Cardiff clash were asked to unite briefly before kick-off to establish the new record.

The previous world record of 800 was held by Mullingar, but the record was increased 10-fold in Limerick where some 8,322 donned Santa hats for the charity.

“I’m delighted to announce that we set the new world record in Thomond Park and I want to extend a huge thank- you to everyone who helped make that happen,” said Peter Ireton, chief executive of Bóthar.

“The support from the rugby fans on the way to the game was genuinely uplifting.

“People are so generous, even in these tougher times,” he added.

“They dug deep and helped us achieve what we set out to achieve.”

The public’s donation of €2 or more per hat will be used to help struggling families in 35 countries worldwide.
