THE European Commission has begun proceedings against Ireland over the legal use of two air travel tax rates for passengers flying within the EU.

Infringement proceedings were issued against Ireland in March over the air taxes, but only emerged yesterday after Ryanair released documents about the concerns in Brussels.

The commission is investigating whether the tax rates discriminate against passengers flying to other jurisdictions and whether this breaches EU competition law.
