Winter whiteout to last a week
According to Met Éireann, up to 25cm of snow is forecast for parts of Leinster over the next two days, while driving conditions will remain hazardous in West Cork, Louth, Wexford, and Wicklow.
Snow showers are expected in the east and the south coast today, with temperatures between -1C and 2C.
The bitter conditions will remain for the duration of tomorrow and Thursday, with temperatures plummeting to as low as -7C or -8C, with freezing fog also expected.
The National Roads Authority (NRA) has confirmed that adequate salt stocks are in place to deal with the icy conditions and are being distributed as required to local authorities, with the most critical roads being treated on a daily basis.
However, the gardaí and the Road Safety Authority are advising people to avoid unnecessary travel and take public transport where possible.
Bus Éireann and Dublin Bus are continuing to operate, but there are curtailments on some routes with bus services in Cork, Dundalk and Drogheda experiencing disruption yesterday. Last night some of the country’s airports were struggling to keep as many planes landing and taking off as possible, although a number of flights between Dublin and Britain were cancelled and flights to Galway were being diverted to Shannon.
Anyone wishing to travel is being advised by the Department of Transport to check with their service provider directly.
The Department of Education said no direction that all schools should close has been issued, and decisions in relation to school bus services will be made by Bus Éireann based on local circumstances.
Eircom revealed that during yesterday about 2,400 customers were without telephone and broadband services across the country.
Meanwhile, in Britain, it is forecast that temperatures could drop to as low as -20C.
