CENTRAL Bank governor Patrick Honohan said he expected the name of Anglo Irish Bank would be taken down from over its door early next year as moves begin to wind up the bank.

Anglo Irish will “disappear as a name” in the next few weeks, he said, raising immediate concerns that hundreds of jobs could be axed.

The Central Bank later issued a statement to clarify the governor’s comments. Any wind-up would have to be done over “a multi-year period as in the current restructuring”.
