DIABETES sufferers could benefit from new treatments after a significant discovery by researchers at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Dublin’s Mater Hospital.

They have identified how cells that produce insulin are regenerated, which could lead to improved treatment of the condition.

Around 141,000 people in Ireland have diabetes, around 90% of them with Type 2, and treatments developed by the findings could lead to reduced health service costs caused by complications such as stroke, kidney and heart failure, blindness and amputations.
