Surge in Cork drugs seizures

GARDAÍ in Cork city say they have noticed a recent rise in the seizure of illegal drugs, which they put down to the clampdown on so-called legal highs from head shops.

Earlier in the year gardaí saw a fall-off in drug seizures. However, since new legislation has stamped out the sale of drugs in head shops they have seen an increase in drug seizures on the streets.

A senior garda source said that more than €500,000 worth of cannabis had been seized in the city in the past month. Seizures involving the cultivation of plants are up nearly 100% in the past year or so.
