John Creedon was presenting his 8.30-10pm show on RTÉ Radio 1 on Monday night when there was a break-in at the RTÉ studios in Cork.

The front door was forced open and an intruder went upstairs where he went from room to room.

Mr Creedon was on air when he spotted the uninvited guest in the control room next to his studio.

The disc jockey then phoned gardaí. That was on Monday night at 9.20pm.

Yesterday at Cork District Court, an unemployed man appeared on a charge of committing a burglary at the RTÉ studios in Cork.

Garda Carolann Ward arrested Kieran Quilligan, aged 34, and charged him with entering the property at Fr Matthew Quay, Cork, on November 1, as a trespasser with intent to commit the offence of theft.

Quilligan was cautioned after being charged and he made no reply.

Eddie Burke, solicitor, was appointed to represent Quilligan on free legal aid after Judge David Riordan was told that the defendant was unemployed.

Inspector Finbarr O’Sullivan said there was no garda objection to the accused being remanded on bail on certain conditions.

Judge Riordan remanded Quilligan on bail until December 15 to allow time for the prosecution to obtain instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Bail conditions require the accused to reside at 102 Bakers Road, Cork, and to sign on daily at Angelsea Street garda station at 4pm. Quilligan was remanded on his on bail of €500 with no cash lodgment required.
