RAPE crisis groups said a massive jump in reported sexual offences highlighted the “shocking” extent to which so many sex crimes were not recorded by gardaí in the past.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office show a rise of 80% in sexual offences in the third quarter of this year, following a 53% jump in the second quarter.

The CSO said the rise was “mainly due” to an internal Garda review which, since April, is recording past sexual offences which were unrecorded.
