Gardaí following ‘definite line of inquiry’ after fatal hit-and-run
Kelly Gregan of Tara Hill, Inch, Gorey, had just left the O2 nightclub in Gorey town and, along with her friend, was crossing the road at a set of traffic lights when they were struck by the car at about 2.40am.
A large number of people had been leaving the club at the time and witnessed the incident.
The car was later found burnt out in a laneway, Kilnahue Lane, about 3km outside Gorey town.
The other girl struck by the car was taken to Wexford hospital where her condition was described as comfortable.
Gardaí were last night following a definite line of inquiry as to the identity of the driver.
Inspector Michael Walsh appealed for witnesses to contact Gorey Garda Station.
“We are awaiting reports from the forensic examination of the car and the crime scene. We have opened up lines of investigation at the moment,” he said.
The woman was one of five people to die on the roads over the bank holiday weekend.
Two men in their 20s were killed when the car in which they were travelling struck a wall at Ballygall Road East in Ballymun shortly before 7am yesterday.
The driver died shortly after the crash. His passenger was rushed to the Mater Hospital in Dublin but died yesterday.
On Saturday, a man in his 60s died after he was involved in a two car crash at Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow, at 7.25am. The female driver and passenger in the other car survived.
Carlow gardaí launched an appeal for witnesses, in particular a man in a dark tracksuit, who was walking or jogging in the area about the time of the crash.
On Friday, a man in his 60s was killed in a two-car collision on the Donegal bypass between the Tully- earl and Dromlonagher roundabouts. The passenger in his car and the driver and passenger of the second car were all taken to Letterkenny General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Meanwhile, a young man was fighting for his life in Cork University Hospital last night after a single-vehicle early morning crash in Cork’s eastern suburbs yesterday.
The 27-year-old, from the Mahon area, was travelling in a car with two men, when it apparently lost control and struck a wall near Menloe Stores, at the eastern end of the Blackrock Road, just after 5am.
A section of Blackrock Road was closed for several hours yesterday as investigators conducted an examination of the scene.
Gardaí appealed for witnesses.
