Recession provides unlikely boost as greenhouse gases fall

IRELAND’S economic downturn has caused greenhouse gases to fall by 8% last year – the biggest fall in 20 years.

It is the first time that a reduction in emissions has been recorded across the board, with the cement sector alone recording a hefty 38% decrease.

Emissions from the industry and commercial sector dropped by 20%, according to statistics from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
