Stores want hundreds of temporary workers

STORES across the country have started launching recruitment campaigns for temporary employees to work the busy Christmas season.

Retail giant Argos is looking for people to fill up to 700 seasonal vacancies in stores across the country during the period leading up to Christmas and into January.

The company said it was recruiting seasonal staff across all 39 stores in Ireland, with application forms available in all local stores, or through the company’s website.

Popular high-street retailer, Debenhams, has also announced that it is on the lookout for 9,000 temporary workers to cope with its busiest time.

The jobs will be split across Debenhams’ 160 outlets and average out at 56 per store.

A spokeswoman for Debenhams said that there had already been more than 1,000 job applications for the Henry Street, Dublin, branch since the positions were advertised.

Luxury lifestyle and clothing store, Brown Thomas, said it would be taking on 150 staff for the festive season, with positions ranging from beauty consultants and cashiers to gift wrapping and stockroom personnel.

Marks & Spencer (M&S) have also announced that 100 positions will become available as it opens a new store in Cork in November, with another 100 temporary and permanent jobs having been created to cover for the season at the Kildare Village Shopping Centre.

According to the latest official figures, more than 440,000 people are claiming benefits, with the unemployment rate currently standing at 13.7%.
