Fleischmann life and legacy celebrated
As part of the centenary celebrations for Aloys Fleischmann, one of the most important figures in music in Ireland in the last century, a new education pack, entitled Meet the Professor, has been developed in his honour.
To be distributed to all second-level schools in Cork, it will be of particular relevance to students studying Music and Civic, Social and Political Education (CSPE).
Cork City Council launched the pack, which was compiled by Michelle Finnerty, a lecturer in Music at University College Cork’s (UCC) School of Music and Theatre.
Meet the Professor gives students an insight into the life of the German immigrant who grew up in Cork. It highlights his early years in the city, his time as Professor of Music in UCC, and his remarkable contribution to musical life in Cork and beyond.
Through a series of worksheets and copies of original documents, students are encouraged to engage with all aspects of Fleischmann’s work as a composer, researcher, organiser and educator.
And to reflect his life as a German immigrant, the worksheets are in English and in German.
A special audio CD gives students the opportunity to hear his diverse compositions, including Clare’s Dragoons, Bata na bPlanndála and Song for a Festive Occasion
“Cultural experience is a key part of children’s lives and the education system plays a central role in fostering this experience,” Ms Finnerty said.
“This pack, which brings one of the principal cultural figures of the 20th century back to the classroom, is designed in a teacher friendly and cross-curricular manner to make it relevant to teachers and students.”
Valerie O’Sullivan, director of the council’s Recreation, Amenity and Cultural Directorate, said education lay at the heart of Fleischmann’s ambitions for music in Cork.
“This programme continues this work by engaging with students both as lovers of music and as active cultural citizens,” she said.
