The family band from Lisgoold, Co Cork, received a huge boost earlier this year when they performed on the widely watched Ellen DeGeneres Show in the US.
The trio – Mary Murray-Burke and her children Dervla and Derek – performed two songs and were interviewed by the host. The appearance followed their rise to prominence when a video of them performing He Drinks Tequila became one of the most watched and discussed items on YouTube.
Derek, 18, is set to attend the St Colman’s Community College graduation ball this evening with Lucy Kennedy. It is understood an RTÉ crew will be on hand to film the event as part of a forthcoming show.
Lucy, 34, first came to public attention as the host of the Podge and Rodge Show on RTÉ. She has also had her own chat show and presented programmes such as the Ex Files and Living with Lucy.
Meanwhile, it is an exciting week for the “King of the Hucklebuck” Derek as he is due to receive his Leaving Cert results tomorrow.
Mary Murray Burke confirmed yesterday that her son was set to bring a television personality as his celebrity date. However, she said it was a case of “all will be revealed” in relation to the identity of the celebrity in question.
“There has been a lot of speculation but I really cannot say. All will be revealed shall we say. It is a big week for Derek as his results are out on Wednesday.
“He is not nervous at all. I think I am more nervous than him but not in a bad way.
“He is confident that he has done as well as he could under the circumstances. With all that was going on it was hard for him to study but you could not turn down the exposure and the opportunities. We are looking forward to the grads. It is a great release for students.”
The St Colman’s Community College graduation ball is due to take place at Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork this evening. Fellow Crystal swing member Dervla will attend the graduation with a friend of Derek’s, Kieran Rohan.
Mary said Derek plans to continue working in the music industry having completed his Leaving Certificate.
“It has been extremely successful for us. He will always be in something to do with people and music,” she said.
“Derek is looking forward to going to the dance with his friends. It has been a great year.”
It is understood Derek Burke has also been signed up for the next series of RTÉ’s Celebrity Bainisteoir.
He recently took up his position as Celebrity Bainisteoir of the Castleisland football team for this year’s hit TV show.
Honoured to be invited on the show as one of the eight Bainisteorí, Derek was delighted when he was recently introduced to his team and took charge of training for the first time.
Eager for the upcoming competition, Derek says the strong club and community spirit evident in the north Kerry town will undoubtedly come to the fore and combine to mount a serious challenge for the winner’s spot this year.
