Limerick man in court charged with attempted murder
Shane Mason, 28, of Sean Heuston Place, is charged with the attempted murder of Daniel Phillips, 20, at St John’s Square, Limerick, on May 24.
He was also charged with assault causing serious harm to Mr Phillips at St John’s Square.
Det Garda Fergal Hanrahan, of Henry Street Garda Station, gave evidence of arresting Mason yesterday morning and putting the charges to the accused. Mason made no reply when charged.
Mason was already in custody on charges of possessing a firearm and ammunition at St John’s Square on May 24 with intent to endanger life.
Sarah Ryan, solicitor for the accused, said bail had been refused in the High Court and she was not making any new bail application.
Judge Olann Kelleher on the application of Insp Brendan McDonagh returned Mason for trial to the Central Criminal Court.
He remanded Mason in custody to appear at Limerick District Court on August 18.
Det Garda Hanrahan said work on the preparation of the book of evidence was ongoing, and he was not in a position to say when it will be ready.
A man had to be removed from the public gallery as he shouted abuse at the accused during the hearing.
Mr Phillips is in a critical but stable condition at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital where he was admitted on May 24 with gunshot wounds to the head and body.
He was transferred to Cork University Hospital, before being brought back to Limerick.
