Romans all set to storm city gaol in battle gear

ROMAN soldiers in full battle gear will march on an historic city former jail at the weekend as part of a new living-history military show.

They will be flanked by Redcoats from the American War of Independence and men dressed in British and German army uniforms from World War Two.

And backing them up will be some of top re-enactor groups from Britain and America, including US Airborne troopers from World War 2, Iron Age Celts, the Bandenburg Commandos, the Medieval Archery Group and even Vikings.

The event at the Cork City Gaol on August 7 and 8 will also feature live battles, re-enactments, a military vehicle display, archery, military traders and memorabilia merchants.

Exhibition stands will include The Royal Munster Fusiliers, The Irish Army from 1916 to the present, US Civil War militaria and WW2 Memorabilia.

Visitors are encouraged to dress up for the event and the most authentic outfit will win a €250 shopping voucher for Brown Thomas.

Outfits can take inspiration from any genre, whether it’s a Roman warrior or an Iron Age Celt.

There will also be a raffle over the weekend with all proceeds going to the Tour de Munster cycling event for this year’s chosen charity, Down Syndrome Ireland.

The event is the brainchild of well-known photographer, and history buff, Ger McCarthy.

“This is the first time that there has been anything like this in Cork,” he said.

“Although there are many people who are very interested in different aspects of military history, if they want to experience what military life was like they have to go to Dublin, Northern Ireland or Britain, where military shows take place.

“We wanted to bring a military show to Cork that would be educational and entertaining.

It’s interactive so that you can see, smell and touch what life was like in times gone by.

“Children can ask the re-enactors questions, try on helmets, watch battles and so on.

“There will be exhibition stands with historic information, and military vehicles on display for what promises to be a fascinating weekend for all.”

Admission is €5 for adults and €10 for a family. It is hoped it will become an annual event.
