Classic American car club seeks gas guzzling enthusiasts

YOU don’t have to be a Texas oil billionaire to take a cruise in one of these classic American gas guzzlers.

A club known as GAScc (Great American Steel Car Club) is seeking new members.

But potential members don’t even have to possess one of the beautifully restored vehicles, some of which are now worth more than €50,000.

The club was formed two years ago and according to its spokesman, Tom Leahy, it has about 70 members who come from Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Clare. They meet regularly at the Viaduct Inn in Cork.

“We do a number of exhibitions in the summer trying to get in as many shows around the country as possible. We also do a major amount of charity fundraising,” Tom said.

He owns a 1971 Ford Mustang 429 Mach 1 Cobra Jet — the only one of its type in Europe and its valued at €50,000

This 7 litre monster isn’t cheap to run.

“It has a 20 gallon tank and you’d get about five miles to the gallon on a good day,” he said.

Another enthusiast has a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle which has a 6.6 litre engine, while another has a wow factor 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, which is worth in the region of €40,000,

Two of the club’s members are specialist mechanics who fix problems for free for fellow members.

“They just have to pay for the parts and there’s no problem getting them. There is a huge back-up system in the US for spare parts,” Tom said.

Most of the classic car owners are in their 40s and drive vehicles which usually have at least 5 litre engines. You have to be more than 25 years old to drive a car of 2 litres or more.
